NATURAL FLAGSTONE.

Hand-set flagstone patios and walkways in Utah and Arizona stone. Premium look, ages beautifully, builds character into your backyard.

Why this matters

STONE WITH
REAL CHARACTER.

Flagstone is irregular natural stone — flat slabs cut from quarries in Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. Each piece is hand-fitted, set in either a sand bed or mortared on a concrete subbase. The result is a patio with the rugged Wasatch character that no manufactured product can replicate.

Flagstone is a premium material and a premium install. We don't try to value-engineer it — flagstone done right takes time and skilled hands.

The Build

DRY-SET OR MORTARED.

01

Site Prep

Excavation, engineered base — same as pavers. Stone-specific base depth varies.

02

Layout

Flagstone laid out dry, hand-fit. We ensure tight, balanced joints before setting.

03

Setting

Either dry-set (sand bed, sand joints) or mortared (concrete subbase, mortar joints). Mortared is more durable in freeze-thaw.

04

Joint & Finish

Joints filled with sand, decomposed granite, or mortar depending on system. Final wash and seal optional.

FAQ

FLAGSTONE & NATURAL STONE QUESTIONS.

Dry-set or mortared — which is better?

For Northern Utah freeze-thaw, mortared on a concrete subbase is more durable. Dry-set is more forgiving and easier to repair, but joints can shift over time. We discuss with each client.

Will the colors fade?

Natural stone color is permanent — what you see is what you get for life. UV doesn't fade real stone.

Is it slippery when wet?

Cleft (rough) flagstone has excellent traction. Smoother stones can be slick — we recommend cleft for pool decks and stairs.

How does pricing compare to pavers?

20-50% more than concrete pavers. The labor is more skilled and slower.

Can it be repaired?

Yes — individual stones can be lifted and reset, or replaced if damaged. Easier than poured concrete repair.

Will it survive Utah winters?

Mortared on a concrete subbase: indefinitely. Dry-set: 20+ years with occasional joint maintenance.
